Col. Bonnichsen, Commander, Fort Meade MEDDAC, recognized Ms. Campbell and presented the Good Catch Award on Friday, 11 August 2017.
On 14 June 2017, a routine complete blood count (CBC) was ordered. Ms. Priscilla Campbell prepared a peripheral blood smear and performed a routine examination of the smear; performed a manual differential and RBC morphology. While examining the smear she saw what appeared to be malarial parasites and immediately alerted her supervisor. Upon review of the smear by her supervisor and an additional technologist, it was confirmed that the malarial parasites were present in the patient’s blood sample. The ordering provider was contacted immediately and informed of the laboratory findings. Ms. Campbell’s attention to detail and technical skills resulted in our provider being able to make a rapid diagnosis of the patient having a malarial infection.
